The Woolly Bear, (also known as the Woolly Worm) is the caterpillar form of the Isabella tiger moth. The caterpillar has become well known over the centuries as a predictor of upcoming winters. The Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk, North Carolina, runs the annual Woolly Worm Race. This bristled caterpillar is divided into 13 color bands, each representing one week of winter. The darker the band, the more severe the weather, with the brown or orange bands representing milder weeks. Since 1978, the worms have been close or completely accurate 57 percent of the time, and more than half right 82.6 percent of the time. Not too bad - most meteorologists would be quite happy with that!
Since 1988, the staff at Bear Mountain State Park in New York have done their own unofficial "research" into the Woolly Bear's accuracy. The caterpillar is black at both ends, with bands of black and orange-brown in the middle. According to legend, the wider the brown middle band is, the milder the winter will be. They guess that their Woolly Bears are right about 80 percent of the time.
